Granite Transformations Tumbles Into 2012 With Beth Tweddle

April 23rd, 2012

Kitchen worktops specialist, Granite Transformations, has celebrated Olympic year by creating a Union Jack-adorned island unit, clad in its tough, hardwearing, diamond-polished material. It then invited Britain’s top gymnast, Beth Tweddle, to show off its patriotic piece by performing a series of rhythmic routines on and around the unit. As a test of the material’s strength and resilience, Beth’s energetic vaulting, tumbling, jumps and acrobatics put it through its paces, although Granite Transformations would expect far more severe treatment in normal household and commercial use, on kitchen worktops, bar counters, tiled floors, shower surrounds and elsewhere.

The authentic Union Jack design, which is twice as wide as it is high, was achieved using a high tech water jet cutter, which sliced through the material with a high velocity mix of water and abrasive particles, to produce the various component triangles and quadrilaterals. These were seamlessly abutted together and bonded onto construction board, creating a countertop measuring 2m x 1m. The unit is finished with 80mm deep edge strips, featuring a 3mm pencil round profile, and double-faced waterfall ends to create a rigid 90cm high structure that could be at home in a sizeable kitchen, sports club, recreational centre or licensed premises.

Rather than adhere to traditional red, white and blue, Granite Transformations chose muted white Cristallino, slate grey and blue steel finishes from its Trend G recycled glass collection, to introduce a ‘designer look’. Made from post-consumer recycled wine, beer and mineral water bottles, with an element of polymer resin for strength and a patented Flexiweb™ backing for flexibility, it outperforms most other finishing materials like natural or engineered stone and solid synthetics.

But what made this whole exercise possible, is the distinctive slimline profile and exceptionally light weight of Granite Transformations’ surfaces. Had it been made from solid granite or stone, the unit would have been far too heavy to be moved and displayed around the country, nor would it have the inherent flexural strength to withstand Beth’s energetic, flying gymnastic routines.

Three-times World, six-times European and seven-times National champion, making her Britain’s most successful gymnast of all time, Beth Tweddle was photographed in a state-of-the-art infinity studio that allowed the full height and breadth of her fantastic gymnastic feats to be captured. She was suitably impressed with the quality of finish and sophisticated looks of Granite Transformations’ one-off Union Jack unit and took time out to admire the latest iGranite app, which previews how its whole range of granite, quartz and recycled glass worktops could look in any kitchen.

Granite Transformations wishes Beth all the best in her Olympic endeavours and will be displaying her acrobatic images in all of its UK showrooms. Click here for further details on the Granite Transformations franchise opportunity.

April 23rd, 2012

Pistachios In The Park is a cafe franchise that combines a community focus with serving freshly prepared quality food.

When the first Pistachios In The Park cafe opened at Manor House Gardens in Lewisham, South London it helped to revive the area, making it a safer and more family friendly environment for parents to take their children. McDonald’s Franchisee Receives National Award For Outstanding Contribution To Charity

April 18th, 2012

Carl Room, the franchise owner of four McDonald’s restaurants, has been presented with an award for his contribution to Ronald McDonald House Charities – an independent charity which provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation to parents whose children are being treated in hospital. A McDonald’s franchisee since 2002, Carl is the first person to be given such an award and it was presented to him at the Charity’s annual gala dinner in London on Thursday 22nd March.

Unaware that he had been nominated by the Charity for the newly created Special Recognition Award, which celebrates an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the Charity, Carl said: “I was overwhelmed but absolutely delighted to have been recognised for the work I have done with Ronald McDonald House Oxford. Since becoming a McDonald’s franchisee, I have put a lot of personal time into the Charity and offered my business skills to help ensure that Ronald McDonald House Oxford runs to budget and raises enough money each year to stay open.

“As well as being the McDonald’s charity of choice, Ronald McDonald House Charities is also an organisation that resonates with me as a father of three children. When your child is ill, there is nowhere else you want to be but by their side and the accommodation offered by Ronald McDonald House Charities makes that possible.”

From joining McDonald’s aged 16 as a part-time crew member, Carl developed a successful management career within the global restaurant chain and then decided to become a franchisee in 2002. Now, with four Oxfordshire restaurants in his portfolio, Carl is busier than ever but has always managed to make time for his voluntary position as Chair of Trustees for Ronald McDonald House Oxford.

Alongside these commitments, Carl is also responsible for setting and meeting the fundraising targets set for each of his restaurants. For the past two years, all four of his restaurants have been tasked with raising £5,000 each for Ronald McDonald House Oxford, bringing the annual contribution to £20,000. Carl also donates a percentage of his sales[i] to Ronald McDonald House Charities and all money donated by customers at the till points is also given to the national arm of the Charity.

Commenting on how he motivates his staff to get behind the Charity, Carl said: “Each and every person who works for me is given an introduction to Ronald McDonald House Charities at the initial training session. All of my restaurant Managers have been to visit Ronald McDonald House Oxford and many of my staff volunteer their time to go and help out at the House. Seeing firsthand how the Charity helps parents of sick children is what motivates us all to go the extra mile in fundraising for Ronald McDonald House Charities.”

[i] In 2011 Carl Room donated £3,680 from his annual sales to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Customers’ Own Veg Patches – Growth Area For Franchise Owners

April 17th, 2012

Veg Box Franchisees Unearth Fresh Source of Profit
In a slightly ironic business twist, franchisees who sell organic vegetables and other organic produce to their customers are now starting to enjoy a profit by getting those same customers to buy ‘grow your own veg’, plant and flower boxes.

Riverford Organic’s founder, Guy Watson, said: “Nine out of 10 Riverford customers are passionate about organic food, and already grow, or want to grow, their own veg – particularly in the warmer months. While it might seem strange that we’re effectively encouraging people to compete with us, Riverford is about creating a sense of community, and we think that the more people get connected with their food, the better. Our ‘grow your own veg’ box scheme is an extension of that ethos.”

Today, with a range that includes a box of high quality organic seedling plants, and a detailed planting guide, garden enthusiasts are now able to grow their own vegetables, herbs and flowers with Riverford’s Organic’s high quality seedlings.

Riverford’s Portsmouth franchisee, Jim Harbridge, says of the scheme: “I think that ‘the boxes to grow’ are a great idea, and sit very well within the Riverford philosophy of encouraging customers to enjoy the process – and also the rewards – of growing their own vegetables, herbs and flowers.”

He adds: “My customers enjoy telling me about how their veg is coming along, which helps to build a sense of community, and that naturally helps with customer retention.”

Laura Cottee, Riverford’s Territory Services Manager, said: “Some Riverford customers – particularly the garden enthusiasts – love growing their own veg in the summer. At Riverford, we believe organic food should have a social element to it, whether that’s in the eating or the growing of it. In this sense, with our ‘grow your own veg’ box scheme, we’ve inadvertently completed the circle. Where other people may see competition, i.e. customers growing the same veg we sell, we’ve seen an opportunity and are using it to enhance the Riverford experience for everybody associated with the brand.”
