A Decade of Celebrating Britain’s Greatest Startups
The 10th annual Startups Awards 2013 have launched and are now open for entries. Sponsored by Simply Business and organised by Startups.co.uk, the number one website for start-ups and small businesses, the Awards recognise the success of Britain’s newest businesses which have been trading for less than three years.
Previous winners at the Awards over the past nine years have included some of the UK’s fastest rising brands, such as Wonga.com, Naked Wines, BeatThatQuote.com (sold to Google for £37.7m), BLOTTR and The Cambridge Satchel Company.
Commenting on winning the Mumpreneur Business of the Year Award 2012 Fiona Wood, of Naturally Cool Kids, commented: “Winning Mumpreneur Business of the Year was amazing. Looking at the quality of judges and the in depth process for judging each business entry, the Startups Awards has definitely given me a huge confidence boost to move forward in to 2013.”
There are 13 awards up for grabs this year, with categories including Innovative Business of the Year, Service Business of the Year and Young Entrepreneur of the Year, as well as Franchisee of the Year, the Woman in Business Award and the overall Simply Business Startups Business of the Year, the winner of which is selected from the winners of the other categories.
A number of highly successful entrepreneurs, business experts and former Startups Awards winners will form the judging panel to review each of this year’s entries. Judges will include: Mary Perkins, co-founder of Specsavers; Sarah Tremellen, founder of Bravissimo; James Ashton, Head of Business at the Evening Standard and Julien Callen of Made.com, winner of the Young Startup of the Year Award 2012.
New for 2013, the Startups Awards welcome Simply Business as the headline sponsor. Jason Stockwood, CEO of Simply Business, commented: “We’re delighted to sponsor this year’s Awards, especially in its 10th year. The past decade has seen sharp changes in the economy, pushing small businesses and start-ups to take initiative and freshen up their approach, in order to disrupt the competition. Judging by the past winners, energy is high in the start-up market, with no shortage of success stories to focus on, and champion. Good luck to everyone who's applying, I look forward to hearing your story!”
Joining Simply Business, are also category sponsors; haysmacintyre (Innovative Business of The Year), The Made Simple Group (Young Entrepreneur of the Year), All Response Media (Digital Business of the Year) and FreeAgent (Home based and Freelance Business of the Year).
David Lester, founder of Startups.co.uk, said: “To start a business, particularly in a downturn, is a gutsy endeavour. We are proud that the Startups Awards recognises those who have the drive, passion and vision to make their business into a success.
“Each year we unearth a whole set of innovative new businesses representing the unique diversity the start-up community has to offer, from home businesses to franchisees. I am confident we will have another fantastic pick of companies and entrepreneurs this year which will show that, despite the recession, British innovation is still booming.”
The deadline for submissions is 13 September 2013 and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Kensington Roof Gardens, on Friday 6 December 2013. Finalists, judges, journalists and sponsors will be attending these prestigious awards.
