Mothercare franchise sales register impressive growth

Mothercare is planning to grow at a rapid pace through franchising. The group is expanding by opening Mothercare stores out of town and some on high streets. It also intends to develop ELC overseas and online.

According to Chief executive Ben Gordon, it was a monumental year for the group. ELC acquisition was a major step towards becoming the world’s largest specialists parenting group. He added:

“We have entered the financial market at the right time and hence are well placed.”

Mr Gordon sees international growth opportunities and strong momentum for its online business.

Sales have boosted per square foot by relocating some stores or opening of smaller shops in the same town and consolidating Mothercare and ELC into one store on the high street.

Mothercare online offering was also successful with sales rising up to 79 per cent to £85.5m last financial year. Therefore, Mothercare is focusing to improve the performance of ELC website as ELC’s entire offering is already available online. Mothercare franchise sales rose to 42.2 per cent. Last year, 51 Mothercare and 26 ELC new franchise stores were opened. At the end of March, there were about 494 stores.
