Subway Welcome Break Charnock Richard Services (l) & MP Lindsay Hoyle, Welcome Break Site Manager Adele Jackson and Subway Development Agent Neil Denny (r) The SUBWAY® brand is delighted to announce a partnership with Welcome Break – one of the UK’s largest motorway service operators.

Two new SUBWAY® stores opened at Welcome Break Motorway Services in the UK on Friday, December 13. The first is at the Welcome Break Charnock Richard Services on the M6, the opening of which was attended by local MP Lindsay Hoyle. The second store to open within this partnership is at the Welcome Break Woodall Services outside of Sheffield. The two store openings have created 20 full-time and part-time jobs.

These new stores mark the milestone of 1,600 SUBWAY® stores now open in the UK, with many more in development.

Keen to introduce a concept into their service stations that offers customers a healthier option, Welcome Break chose the SUBWAY® brand as they recognised the brand’s ongoing commitment to encouraging a healthier, more active lifestyle.

The SUBWAY® brand and Welcome Break share a focus of providing healthy choices for all the family. At the core of the SUBWAY® offering is the Low Fat Range of Subs, flatbreads and salads all of which are under 370 calories, contain less than 3g of fat and under 1.5g of saturates per 100g and contain one of the recommend five portions of fruit and vegetables a day when customers choose the standard salad items. For children, the SUBWAY® brand offers a Kids’ Pak™ which was reformulated in summer 2013. All of the four 4-inch Sub options offered are low in fat and saturated fat and the BEAR Fruit Yo-yo, which replaces the cookie or crisp option, is free from saturates and provides one of a child’s recommended five-a-day portions of fruit and vegetables.

The SUBWAY® brand is a committed partner to the UK Government’s Public Health Responsibility Deal and is the only QSR to have endorsed six of the nutrition-related pledges. The SUBWAY® brand has reduced salt, eliminated trans fats, displayed nutritional information on menu boards, cut calories across the product range, increased access to fruit and vegetables and reduced saturated fat.

The new Welcome Break stores are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week ensuring that customers have access to healthier choices, made fresh in front of them, no matter what time of day or night.

Rod McKie, CEO of Welcome Break, commented: “We are thrilled to be announcing that the SUBWAY® brand has been added to our existing offering at Welcome Break Woodall and Welcome Break Charnock Richard. We have been looking to introduce our customers to healthier options and the product range that the SUBWAY® brand offers has enabled us to do this at two of our service stations. This is a partnership that we predict to go from strength-to-strength and we fully expect to be introducing the SUBWAY® brand to other Welcome Breaks across the UK in the very near future.”

Neil Denny, SUBWAY® Development Agent for the North West, said: “We have been working closely with Welcome Break over recent months and we are very excited to be opening the first two stores in the partnership. A SUBWAY® franchise is the perfect fit for a busy motorway service station and from a consumer perspective there is a real gap for healthier, made-to-order, great value options when customers stop on their travels. We hope to see many more SUBWAY® stores in Welcome Break motorway service stations in the coming months.”

Lindsay Hoyle MP for Chorley, who opened the new SUBWAY® store, said: “I am delighted that Subway have opened a new store at Charnock Richard Services. Subway employs 60 people across Chorley Borough and is extremely popular amongst local residents. The new store will provide those stopping at the service centre with a greater choice of healthier food and drink and I am sure that this new venture will be extremely successful. The additional choice offered to customers and continual growth of Subway in our locality makes them an important partner in expanding the food and drink sector here in Chorley.”

A key focus of development for the SUBWAY® brand has been non-traditional, off high street locations and partnerships with well-known brands such as Welcome Break and Euro Garages are key to the success of this development. There are currently more than 300 SUBWAY® stores open or in development in these locations across the UK and Ireland. The simple operations that are involved in running a SUBWAY® franchise and the convenience offer make it a perfect fit for these style locations, ensuring that people on the go are have access to healthier options.
